The Policing of Public Gatherings - Evaluating Transparency and Access to Information
We presented initial results of an audit on the Policing of Protests, developed by the Program for Public Transparency (PTP) at the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) in collaboration with the Open Society Justice Initiative (OSF). The audit evaluated the policing of protests in various jurisdictions in 5 countries - Brazil, India, Mexico, South Africa, and the UK. Project team leaders include Rafael Velasco (FGV-PTP, Brazil), Venkatesh Nayak (CHRI, India), Prof. Juan Salgado (CIDE, Mexico), David Bruce (SAHA, South Africa), and Prof. Ben Worthy (Birkbeck College, University of London, United Kingdom).
This project seeks to instigate new commitments in encouraging police transparency and a conversation about the kinds of information that police forces in democratic societies should generate, maintain, share with other departments, and make available to the public.
